About the team:

The Patient Access Specialist Lead is a functional expert for all aspects of Patient Access and serves as a resource to Patient Access staff for procedural and technical issues, workflow concerns, and scheduling/work assignments. The Patient Access Specialist Lead will be held accountable for ensuring patients are accurately scheduled and registered for their clinic and hospital services, as well as various other position functions to ensure patients are supported through their entire patient care experience including financial liability by providing excellent quality and compassionate customer service.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, Associates Degree preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Knowledge of healthcare revenue cycle preferred.

Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registration:

  1. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification encouraged.

Job Specific Duties:

  1. Schedule and register patients into applicable software system(s) while ensuring the integrity and accuracy of data collected, including patient identification, insurance and benefit verification. Assist Patient Access Specialist II with pre-access processes before the patient visit, including but not limited to, additional insurance and benefit investigation. Assist in determination of final pre-service clearance before patient visit.
  2. Coordinate and maintain the Patient Access staffing schedule. Including drafting the monthly schedule, addressing scheduling requests and changes, ensuring staff work to their assigned full time equivalent status, and reassigning tasks and assignments based on volumes and needs of the respective departments to ensure customer service and workflow needs are met.
  3. Coordinate Patient Access department orientation and onboarding to new team members. Ensure team members are effectively oriented, monitor performance and identify training opportunities. Provide feedback to Patient Access Supervisor and Manager regarding individual employee performance.
  4. Operate multi-line telephone system to receive, route and respond to incoming phone calls in a timely, professional manner. Monitor and report phone-related activities including call volumes, wait times and abandoned calls.
  5. Verify acquisition of referrals and pre-authorizations for applicable services.
  6. Perform point of service collections for patient financial responsibility, not limited to but including, co-payments, co-insurances and statement balances. Generating payment receipts, opening and closing of daily cash drawer.
  7. Complete individual daily workque assignments and assist with other Patient Access workques.
  8. Research and analyze alternatives for improving workflows. Assist in developing “best practice” recommendations by partnering with other team members in examining data and identifying trends.
  9. Respond to patient inquiries and requests and completes timely and accurate patient intake while ensuring the patient’s comfort, dignity, safety, and confidentiality at all times.
  10. Accurately process incoming, outgoing, and inter-office mail.
  11. Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned.

This is a union position, compensation is $20.17 to $28.15 based on years of experience.
